Valuation Books

This collection of pages photographed in the Valuation Office on 21 October 2014 lists the occupiers of the townland of Newtown up to 1971.

Some of these images could be more clearly focussed. Apologies.

There is a gap of eight years between Griffith's Valuation in 1850 and the first manuscript volume dated 1858. Wholesale renumbering of plots took place during this period, increasing the total number of holdings in Newtown from 58 to 67. One manuscript book for Newtown for an unspecified period of years was officially recorded as missing. Valuation Office staff said on 21 October 2014 that the missing book had been found.

Valuation office records show that the Limerick Board of Guardians first acquired half an acre in plot 21B from Margaret O'Dea in 1889 and that the occupier of the house and offices built on this site was Denis Gavan.  The second half acre acquired under the 1904 deed doubled the size of Gavan's holding.
