Typos in Irish Townland Indexes
- There are 61,106(ish) townlands in Ireland according to logainm.ie
- The searchable IreAtlas database was re-keyed from an
1851 book listing these townlands by John Broderick R.I.P. (aka SeanRuad)
(d.2001)
- For each townland, the database shows in which County, Barony, Civil
Parish, Poor Law Union and Province it lies
- The accuracy of the transcription is truly remarkable

Other Anomalies in Irish Townland Indexes
This seems an appropriate place to compile lists like this:
Townlands divided between multiple parishes
- Ballygeale
is divided between the parishes of Adare and Killonahan in county
Limerick.
- Cratloe is
divided between the parishes of Kilfintinan and Killeely in the part of
county Clare which is in the Poor Law Union of Limerick (the adjacent
townlands of Cratloekeel and Cratloemoyle are both entirely in Killeely
civil parish).
Single townlands cut off from neighbouring townlands
- Drewstown,
Little in Girley civil parish is the only townland in county Meath
which is in Castletowndevlin Poor Law Union; the rest of the Poor Law Union
is in county Westmeath and the rest of the civil parish, including the
townland of Drewstown, Great is in Kells Poor Law Union.
- Boolynagleragh
in Kilmaley civil parish is the only townland in that parish which is in
Killadysert Poor Law Union; the rest of the parish is in Ennis Poor Law
Union.
- Ballyegny Beg and Ballyegny More in Clonagh civil parish are in Glin Poor
Law Union; the rest of the parish is in Rathkeale Poor Law Union.
- Acres and Knockcoolkeare in Killeedy civil parish in county Limerick are
in Kanturk Poor Law Union; the rest of the parish is in Newcastle Poor Law
Union; the rest of the Kanturk Poor Law Union is in county Cork.
Changes in 1898
When County Councils were introduced in 1898, a number of minor changes were
made to county boundaries, including the following:
- a number of townlands were transferred from counties Mayo and Galway to
county Roscommon; see here;
and
- a number of townlands in the area around Mountshannon and Whitegate were
transferred from county Galway to county Clare.
